Project built for the Canadian Canoe Museum and the real-world project lab course at George Brown College.
Concept done in collaboration with Manan Monga and Ashwin Venkat.
The Canadian Canoe Museum was seeking to expand its reach in the digital realm while exposing the many cultures of canoes, strengthening connections between audiences, and building a new experience for visitors to learn about canoes.
Brief Breakdown and Secondary Research
We took a deep dive into the project brief to understand the museums values: the preservation of cultures, connections between indigenous peoples and new Canadians, and pushing creative boundaries of indoor/outdoor connection to enable new experiences for visitors. We also looked into the history of canoes (origins, design, and spirituality).
Precedent Research
We explored various digital experiences that seemed relevant to the project to inspire potential ideas. Among them we looked at indigenous art featuring canoes, immersive virtual museum tours, VR documentaries, and art projections.
How might we create a new digital experience that helps tell the stories of different cultures surrounding canoes, strengthen our connection to these cultures, and enable visitors to learn about the design and fabrication of canoes?
Concept Brainstorming + Voting
We brainstormed ideas that referenced back to the museum's values and dot voted on the best idea.

Storyboard and Moodboard
To bring this concept to life, we researched famous indigenous tales and legends surrounding canoes. We found "The Flying Canoe" and decided to use this legend as the story in our prototype. We took apart the story to outline the frames to use for the final storyboard. We created a mood board to showcase the colours and style we wanted to set.
Project Outcome
This project would allow the museum to expand their audience and their digital presence while creating an engaging experience they can learn from.
Looking at the History of Canoes
It is important to look at the history of who and what you are designing for. Canoes have a strong history around the world and creating a connection between the past and present can create a powerful experience.
